# Vintage 1950s Hamilton Skotch Kooler Deluxe 4-Gallon Set. 404 – Designed by Petra Cabot. ## Complete Collector’s Lot with Original Box, Trays, & Paperwork. Up for sale is an incredibly rare, investment-grade find for mid-century Americana and outdoor enthusiasts: a complete 1957 Hamilton Skotch Kooler Deluxe Model 404 4-gallon metal cooler set. While loose vintage coolers are common, it is exceptionally difficult to find this iconic piece with its original internal components, let alone its original cardboard retail box and paper instructional flyer! The undeniable charm of the Skotch Kooler is the work of Petra Cabot, a pioneering mid-century American industrial designer and artist. Introduced in 1952, her revolutionary tartan plaid pattern transformed a utilitarian metal bucket into a high-fashion, must-have lifestyle accessory of 1950s suburbia. Educated at the Art Students League of New York, Cabot brought a fine-arts sensibility to commercial products. Her “Skotch Plaid” design became an instant pop-culture phenomenon, expanding into a full line of picnicware and cementing Cabot’s legacy as a master of mid-century modern aesthetic. ### What’s Included in This Deluxe Lot. The Skotch Kooler (4 Gallon): Features stunningly bright red, black, and tan tartan plaid lithograph graphics. The exterior tin is remarkably clean, the handle operates smoothly, and the interior tub is well-preserved. Notably, the underside/bottom base is exceptionally clean, showing virtually none of the heavy rusting or shelf wear typical for metal coolers of this era. Features striking vintage typography, style numbers, and original branding stamps that provide unparalleled collector provenance. Original Paper Instruction Flyer: A beautifully preserved, legible pamphlet detailing the fiberglass insulation properties, care instructions, and design legacy. Clear Plastic Separator Tray: Sits perfectly at the top rim of the cooler to keep sandwiches or snacks dry and safely separated from ice. Red Spongex Plastic “Nicer” Insert: The multi-piece red foam/plastic interior bucket system stamped “Spongex Plastic” and “Nicer” with its corresponding lid. Brand: The Hamilton Metal Products Co. 404 Deluxe (Stock #404). Capacity: 4 Gallons (16 Quarts). Era: 1957 / Late 1950s Mid-Century Modern. Country of Manufacture: USA. This set has been remarkably preserved for nearly 70 years. The metal cooler displays excellent color fidelity with minimal signs of aging. The interior liner is clean and completely ready for display or careful retro use. The internal trays and Spongex bucket show no cracks or severe structural deterioration. The outer cardboard box does show expected vintage wear including scuffs, structural softening, old tape/residue, and minor tearing from storage, but remains completely intact as a rare piece of history. Don’t miss your chance to add this definitive, complete deluxe set to your mid-century collection!
